Creatine is a naturally occurring nitrogenous organic acid in the human body that has a powerful role to supply energy to muscle and nerve cells. 95% of Creatine is later stored in the skeletal muscles, with the rest in the brain, heart, testes, inner ear hair cells and other organs and cells. A molecule called Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is believed to be the immediate energy source for skeletal muscle contractions. During Catabolic Stress (or physical exercise) ATP demand in the working muscles increases significantly to several hundred times. Such a high demand may totally deplete stored ATP and phosphocreatine (or Creatine Phosphate) within seconds. The depleted levels of ATP and CP need to be steadily replenished in order for muscular contractions to continue. It is believed that Oral supplementation of creatine can increase the free creatine pool, maximize ATP production and increase CP reserves.

Precautions:
Creatine supplementation is considered safe for exercising healthy athletes. Small-scale, longer-term studies have been done and seem to demonstrate its safety. There have been reports of muscle cramping with the use of creatine, though a study showed no reports of muscle cramping in subjects taking creatine-containing supplements during various exercise training conditions in trained and untrained endurance athletes. Some younger creatine supplement users have complained that the use of creatine causes long-term acne outbreaks.
